At Radnorshire Wildlife trust our primary focus remains nature's recovery through extensive management, staying true to our vision. However our Wilder Pentwyn project has given RWT the chance to try new ways of working, both with farmers and those that support our work on site.
We have made great strides so far and now have two full time staff working in and around the site. To date we have been able to create a tenancy opportunity for a couple to run a market garden, and we have 3 separate farmers involved in grazing Pentwyn Farm.
Grazing animals, especially cattle and pigs, are key to high quality grassland, scrub, moorland and Ffridd, and we have provided an opportunity for a farmer to work with us to develop a grass-fed, extensive grazed herd, which we have helped to market direct to consumers.
The Wildlife Trusts are signed up to the Eating Better alliance. We know that the science around climate and nature leads to lower meat consumption, but of higher quality - grass-fed and extensively grazed. The economics lead us to local supply chains, where the profit goes direct to the farmer as being a kinder and more equitable business.
Supporting the local economy and placing a nature lead project at the heart of positive activity has been key for us not just at Pentwyn Farm, but at Radnorshire Wildlife Trust as a whole organisation.
We will continue to explore events that promote the produce at Pentwyn Farm and support the people we work with to continue managing for nature. Please check our website for future events. We hope to launch the market garden produce over summer.
