Beacon Hill is a large area of wild upland common rising to 547m (1800ft) with far reaching views. Much of the common is owned by The Crown Estate but Radnorshire Wildlife Trust owns Cnwch Bank.
Dense patches of heather and bilberry survive on the higher slopes whilst wet flushes support water purslane, lesser twayblade, pillwort and orange foxtail.
Breeding birds include meadow pipit, stonechat, merlin, red grouse, linnet, peregrine falcon and raven.
There are several pools dotted about the common with Pool Hill and the River Lugg both being notified Sites of Special Scientific Interest.
